From Nicole:
When most people ask how Jason is or what exactly is going on my short answer is, “he’s okay. Just pray for him.” For anyone that is interested, I’ll explain whats really going on but it’s quite a read.
In most children, their “brain waves” aren’t supposed to spike. It may if they are exhausted but not a lot. In a child with seizures, they have a seizure when brain waves start shooting off. When Jason went into the hospital in July, his brain waves were shooting off rapidly, 91-100% of the time, at ALL times. Which means while his body wasn’t always physically in a seizure, his brain was. His brain was never resting. When we sleep, our brain goes to work healing our body, storing memories, storing what we learn. His was basically wiping everything clean. That explains why he wasn’t really learninglast year. It comes with regression, so he would know his colors a few days, then forget. Spell his name out loud, then forget.
They started him on medicine and by Sept his brain was a lot calmer! He learned 20 letter sounds, could count to 20, could hand me ALL the correct colors. He was learning so fast. And his behavior had calmed down so much. Still struggled at school academically and behaviorally, but overall he was learning and understanding.
At his last hospital stay this month, his brain waves are back to spiking 85% which means 85% of the time, his brain is going crazy. His body isn’t because he is on seizure medicine, but his brain can’t rest. This causes behavior problems, learning difficulties. And I can see it. His behavior is getting worse, he has forgotten colors again. He is struggling in therapy again when at one point we were talking about him hitting ALL of his goals.
ESES is hard to treat. more seizure medicines. Steroids. IV therapies. All come with side effects that then need more medicine to treat. No promise any of it will work. It does in some children and not in others. And it may work one month and then stop. As it gets worse, kids show regression. It can go as far as forgetting how to walk and talk. And so many doctors don’t know anything about ESES because it is rare.
If you have read this far, we go for a second opinion with a doctor in Washington DC next week. Please pray that as we move forward, we are making the best choices for Jason and God is leading us to the right doctor and hospital for him.
